Bill's Cafe Lewes

Sister in law Spread lives in Lewes, so we headed down that way this weekend for a host of bohemian and creative activities. Think naked summer party at the Lido or expressive meditative dance.

Actually, it was the Artwave festival that was on and we wondered from location to location reviewing pieces of art in the form of paintings, sculptures, jewellery and fashion. This is also a great excuse to poke around people’s houses, as many of the exhibition spaces are indeed inside people’s homes.

Whilst we were there, I also managed to purchase two very lovely vintage hats, which I now have nowhere to wear, so might just wear everywhere? One is a brilliant 1940’s side of head number and the other a warm tweed trilby. The other joy of going to Lewes is partaking in some of Bill’s fare whilst there.

You may remember him from one of my favourite recipes ‘Bill’s beans’ which can be found here.

As usual, the Cafe was bustling, filled to the rafters and beyond with the locals enjoying a spot of brunch or afternoon tea. After reviewing the menu, Gipsy Spread had the marinated chicken skewers whilst I went for the delightful halloumi burger with a yoghurt and sweet chilli dressing and skinny fries. The skinny fries do not make you thinner, but rather, are just skinny.

It is worth mentioning that Bill is also slowly taking over the world, having expanded this once humble little cafe into a national franchise. He has two restaurants in Covent Garden with a slightly varied menu to the original Bill’s in Lewes and he also pops up in Hoxton Square. His brand of local, seasonal produce, responsibly sourced is clearly a winning combination. You can find his restaurants here.
